Three Wheeled Buggies
Three-wheeled buggies are great for walking around the neighborhood or jogging. Their compact design allows them to be maneuvered easily even in tight areas.
For an easy ride, opt for a pram with air-filled tyres. Also, look for models with an swivel wheel that rotates 360 degrees in front. They are, however, susceptible, to punctures. Be prepared with a repair set.
Sturdy frame
The latest figures have been released showing that the three-wheeled buggie - that noughties symbol of more money than sanity is on the verge of disappearing. They are being replaced by four-wheelers that are able to be more versatile in terrain, while also looking stylish and easy to push.
The rule is that the bigger the wheels are, the easier it will be for your buggy to cope with bumpy ground and rough pavements. Having larger wheels both front and back makes it much easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or on difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy with a newborn as well as a 3 year old and found that it was able to handle grass, cobbles, rough roads, dirt tracks and kerbs. She said that it felt solid to push and very solid on difficult terrain. The tyres, that are inflated and require to be pumped up regularly, have built-in suspension. This was extremely comfortable for my kids.
Another thing to consider is the size and shape. The seat should be big enough for your child to be comfortable and to allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies will have the option of reclining completely, while others only allow for the parent to be facing one.
A great choice for tackling off-road and muddy trails is the Roma Atlas. This buggy is ideal for a single child starting from birth, and can be adapted to accommodate two children as your family grows. It is suitable for babies and toddlers up to age four and includes a bumper bar, raincover, an improved 5-point harness, and a large cushioned seat. The storage options are excellent as well, with a large basket, zip pockets inside the hood, and a handy pouch on the back of the seat unit.
Larger wheels
Larger wheels means that your buggy will be more stable on rough terrain - ideal for off-road buggies. In addition, they help you maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. Some three-wheeled buggies come with rotating wheels on the front, which aid in maneuvering around tight corners. Others are designed for running and have fixed wheels that lock to provide increased speed and stability. This can also help in the event that you hit an unintentional tree root or curb, since the front wheel will rise up slightly to prevent you from hitting it.

Many 3 wheeled pushchairs have air-filled tyres that allow them to navigate a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. However, they're prone to punctures and you'll need an repair kit, spare tube and pump in your bag.
Our top 3-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both of these buggies have larger wheels that, as per MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on gravel tracks, grass and market town cobbles" and are able to easily climb and descend kerbs. The buggies also come with a suspension that Kath says "smooths out bumps with great efficiency".
Buggies with larger wheels may be quite wide and can be difficult to fit into tight spaces. This could be a problem if you use it for jogging, or need to fit through doorways that are narrow when traveling. Most models come with compact folding options, which allow you to remove the front wheels and store them in a more compact manner.
Easy to Manoeuvre
One of the major advantages to a three wheel buggy is that it's much easier to maneuver particularly with a child in tow. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels rotate at a moment's notice, and are easy to move, making them ideal for challenging terrain such as cobblestones, parks, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried the 3-wheeler with her toddler, and she wrote: "The Terrain is a pleasure to drive in rough terrain. 3 wheeler pushchairs was especially helpful." I was also impressed with how well it handled kerbs when using the hand-operated break. I found it extremely stable when going downhill or over uneven ground."
The only drawback to this incredible maneuverability is that the larger wheels of the 3 wheel buggy might make it difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is something to be aware of when you live in a city. If this is a problem, a 4-wheel buggy might be a better choice for you.
